Overview

Product profile.

A chicory-derived inulin powder concept intended for fibre enrichment and nutrition-focused product development. Inulin is a soluble dietary fibre made primarily of fructose units; chicory root is a major commercial source. The concept is designed around more than fibre addition — depending on grade and application, inulin can also contribute to mouthfeel, texture and reformulation strategies such as partial sugar or fat replacement. It resists digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and reaches the large intestine, where it can be fermented by the gut microbiota — the pathway central to scientific interest in chicory inulin as a prebiotic fibre.

  • Fibre fortification — a soluble-fibre ingredient for foods, beverages and nutrition products
  • Chicory-based ingredient — derived from chicory root
  • Prebiotic potential* — chicory inulin is widely studied as a prebiotic fibre; product-specific claims require composition, dose and regulatory review
  • Formulation versatility — powder beverages, supplements, dairy/non-dairy, bakery, cereals, bars and confectionery
  • Sensory & texture potential — mouthfeel and texture support depending on chain length and formulation
  • Reformulation potential — fibre-forward sugar- or fat-reduction concepts where technically and legally suitable

Scientific identity

Source and composition.

A clear technical identity helps formulators assess ingredient fit.

Source
Chicory root — used as the incoming raw material
Ingredient type
Inulin — soluble dietary fibre of the fructan family, composed of linked fructose units
Natural occurrence
Naturally present in onion, leek, banana and garlic; commercial inulin commonly obtained from chicory root
Related ingredients
Inulin and oligofructose/FOS are related fructans, but chain-length distribution and technological behaviour can differLimited data
Composition
Inulin assay, dietary-fibre content, moisture and carbohydrate profile pending

Solubility / dispersibility
To be measured in water and representative finished-product systems
Sensory
Sweetness, taste and mouthfeel assessment planned; inulin can offer mild sweetness
Texture
Creaminess, body and application-dependent fat-mimetic potential to be evaluated
Application trials
Representative powder beverage, supplement, bakery and dairy/non-dairy prototypes planned
Stability
Physical and chemical stability under intended storage conditions to be established

Applications

Formulation directions.

  • Powder beverages & nutrition mixes
  • Dietary supplements — powders, sachets, tablets
  • Dairy & non-dairy beverages, desserts and cultured systems
  • Bakery, cereals & pasta
  • Bars & confectionery
  • Healthy nutrition concepts built around fibre intake

Dietary fibre intake can fall below recommended levels, creating an opportunity for meaningful fibre enrichment in everyday foods. Use level and claims depend on grade, chain-length profile and market-specific regulation; validate in the intended formulation.
